Pohang Steelers of professional soccer K League 1 suffered another refereeing error.
According to the Korea Football Association on the 5th, the referee evaluation subcommittee of the Football Association
Referee Committee held the previous day concluded that the second penalty kick decision made at the end of the match
between Pohang and Gimcheon Sangmu last weekend was a misjudgment.
Pohang lost 1-3 in the away match against Gimcheon in the 16th round of the Hana Bank K League 1 2024 held at
Gimcheon Stadium on the 토토 1st.
Pohang, who were trailing 0-1, appeared to have earned a point in the enemy territory when Jorge equalized with a penalty
kick in the 44th minute of the second half.
However, in the second half of added time, Pohang's Han Chan-hee was judged to have committed a foul by tripping
Gimcheon's Kim Min-jun, and a penalty kick was awarded to Gimcheon.
Kimcheon's Yoo Kang-hyun scored a penalty kick. Kimcheon, who had seized the opportunity to win, soon followed up
with a goal from Choi Ki-yoon, winning 3-1.
However, it was later confirmed that the foul call against Han Chan-hee was a misjudgment.
It has been reported that the referee who made the problematic decision has been suspended from the game.
For Pohang, this misjudgment was even more frustrating because it occurred in a head-to-head match against Gimcheon,
a team competing for the top spot.
Before the 16th round, Pohang was in the lead (29 points) and Gimcheon was in 3rd (27 points), but now the positions
have been reversed, with Gimcheon in 2nd (30 points) and Pohang in 3rd (29 points).
This is the second time in recent times that Pohang has suffered damage due to a questionable decision.
There was an unfair decision made in the 14th round match between Pohang and FC Seoul held at Pohang Steel Yard.
In the 8th minute of the first half, Seoul's Lee Seung-jun received a yellow card for a rough tackle where he touched an
opposing player's shin with his soccer shoe stud.
However, the referee committee ruled that Seungjun Lee's actions were "a foul that threatened the safety of the opponent
and should be punished with a sending off," and the Korea Professional Football League's Disciplinary Committee
combined the results of the association's referee committee's evaluation and the opinion of the K League's technical
committee to impose a two-game suspension on Seungjun Lee.
If the correct decision had been made on the spot and Lee Seung-jun had been sent off immediately, Pohang could have
gained a numerical advantage.
In this match, Pohang drew 2-2 with Seoul.
